The Butterfly Lovers

This project is about a famous ancient Chinese folk tale "The Butterfly Lovers" which has been interpreted in many versions in opera and orchestral music. "The Butterfly Lovers" was known as the Chinese version of "Romeo and Juliet". But in this story, their love was hindered by their social status, and secular rituals. At the end of the story, the girl jumped into the boy’s crumbling grave and died for love. Their spirits finally get rid of the secular restrictions by way of death and are turned into two butterflies flying entwined out of the grave. Sadly, there is no way in reality that lovers can turn into butterflies after they died, the painting depicts the girl's last illusion of meeting the boy on the terrace before her death.
